The whole debate of Belgium banning burkhas is so out of context. Why take it to the levels of religious freedom when it is only about security measures. The ban is not about wearing burkhas, it’s more of a ban on hiding your face. The hardliners and the liberals have both given it a wrong dimension. Both are treating it as an issue of religious freedom and complicating the issue, a manipluation that every leader resorts to, to establish his/her leadership.
If one finds security measures in USA draconian, there is a simple solution. Don’t visit USA. I heard a podcast where Fareed Zakaria (Newsweek chief editor) interviews Shah Rukh Khan on his controversial security check at the US airport. SRK’s reply summed it all. He said that I respect the laws of the country I am visiting but it’s in my hands wether I visit that country. So now when I have to go holidaying, I prefer taking my kids to Europe. Banning burkhas is in the hands of Belgium government but visiting Belgium is in your hands.
I agree Ritika but I think you are being simplistic. Consider the people who live in those countries. They don't have the easy choice of just leaving their livelihood. What if the Burqa was banned in India?
ReplyDeleteComing back to France, Belgium (and maybe Germany & Switzerland going forward), I think their main concern is that the hijaab mode of dress stands out and makes the wearers easy targets. A more rightist view is that these Christian countries do not want to see their landscape overrun by Muslim symbols.
Yet for many women, stripping them of this mode of dress is akin to asking them to walk naked in the streets.
What's the solution? Not easy.
Hey Ashok,
ReplyDeleteI think you are right about me being too simplistic. Blame it on my job profile as a Business Analyst. I tend to oversimply things :). There a variety of supposed reasons of banning burqa. And the views you have sighted are also true. And I too believe, that true freedom is letting one decide what one wants to wear.
But when u have so may reasons propagating to pick and choose from, I just picked the one that I felt is probably the most decent explanation and that's security. These countries had burqa for so many years. Then what has suddenly changed now? If containing Muslim symbols is the reason then I agree that they are wrong but if security is the reason, it does make sense.
As u said its not a easy solution, neither it is an easy side to take.
